An unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) is a mechanical vehicle that operates while in contact with the ground and without an onboard human presence to maneuver it. These robotic systems possess the ability to endure harsh terrain, triangulate enemy sites, sense toxic atmospheres, remotely detonate & defuse bombs, and accomplish numerous other missions that may be inconvenient, dangerous, or impossible for humans to execute while being present.

Generally, the vehicle has a set of sensors to observe the environment. Either the vehicle autonomously makes decisions about its behavior or passes on the information to a human operator at a different location who controls the vehicle through tele-operation or other means.

These offer flexible robotic platform along with providing multipurpose mobility support. The major applications of the vehicle are in the defense sector; which include providing surveillance information, carrying supplies, assisting in explosive activation etc. Adding to that, these vehicles are also used in emergency services that include police, ambulance etc. and also for commercial purposes in various industries such as logistics, defense, and entertainment industry.

The global unmanned ground vehicles market is expected to grow at a thriving CAGR in the coming years.

MARKET DRIVERS:

The growth of this market is attributed towards major relying factors including;  the rising application and preference of UGVs in various industry verticals, the increasing use of robots in areas affected by chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear defense (CBRN) attacks, rising adoption of UGVs for counter-insurgency operations, the growing demand for autonomous control systems in defense and commercial sectors, the globally rising expenditure and modernization of the defense industry, growing worldwide focus on technological advancements and elimination of human exposure to high-threat environments, the rise in defense expenditure and heavy investments made towards upgrading defense fleet by the governments etc.

Additionally, advanced functions, such as secure communications and control, autonomous path following, obstacle avoidance, automatic target tracking, and data compression in UGVs, increasingly aid the military in Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition (RSTA) missions. Also, various federal law enforcement agencies across the world are using these vehicles for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) activities. This is boosting the growth of the overall UGV market rapidly.

Also, UGVs are used on a large scale for critical missions and have resulted in saving many lives. The increasing threats worldwide from terrorist activities have made it significant to adopt and use UGVs on a higher level. The UGV at present is used in several defense applications ranging from search and rescue and transportation to combat support. The number of war field casualties may be considerably lessened by deploying surveillance and reconnaissance unmanned ground vehicles to fetch important relevant data which prove to be beneficial in reducing the risks and making decisions etc.

Moreover, these vehicles do not require continuous involvement of man power, which reduces operating cost for the organizations that owns the vehicle, resulting in higher profit margins. Also, UGVs these days are integrated with advanced driving assistance systems that enhance the safety features of these vehicles in order to avoid accidents. This increases their demand and drives growth in the global market.

Furthermore, benefits such as reduction in risk of human life and impressive vehicle combat performance coupled with factors such as increasing demand of UGVs in civilian applications including homeland security and commercial purpose, rise in demand to increase operational efficiency, increasing R&D initiatives and investments for product development, deployment of latest technologies in the UGV to enhance navigation and communication systems, high demand attributed to UGVs increasing demand in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations in the military & defense sector, increasing political instability and cross border tension and the development in sensor systems will further propel the market growth for UGVS.

However, legal challenges surrounding the technology along with challenge of navigating unmapped environment, the high cost of these vehicles, cuts in defense budgets by developed countries, the restricted battery life of the vehicles and increasing requirement for developing sophisticated and highly reliable UGVs on the global scale are a few factors hindering the growth of this market.

REGIONAL INSIGHT:

The North American region is dominating the unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) market by holding the largest market share followed by Europe and is anticipated to account for significant growth in the upcoming years owing to factors such as; the increasing manufacturing, development and usage of military unmanned systems in countries like the U.S, the growing number of contractual agreements between governments and major players manufacturing UGVs in the region for delivering UGVs with combat capabilities, increasing deployment of UGV systems along the Mexican border to ensure that the gang-related violence and conflicts in Northern Mexico do not spill over to America, increasing number of investments in these systems in the region, the utilization of large number of unmanned vehicles by the U.S. Army for surveillance and warfare purposes and the presence of large number of established market players in the region etc. The U.S is the major contributor in the region.

The Asia Pacific region is the fastest growing regional market for UGVs and is projected to grow at a flourishing rate in the next few years. The growth in this region can be attributed to the increasing investments to develop UGVs for defense as well as commercial applications, the increasing focus of emerging economies like India, China, Japan and others to strengthen their land based military systems and the increase in the number of manufacturing bases for commercial UGVs along with several other associated factors influencing the market. The major contributors in the region include India, China, Japan, Australia and South Korea.
