Breathable films, also known as micro-porous films, are semi-permeable films composed of micro porous structures that allow the exchange of water vapor and gases, but prevent liquids or water to pass through them. They are a three-dimensional matrix of long-chained molecules usually manufactured from highly filled polymers such as polyethylene, polypropylene or polyurethane and calcium carbonate by the extrusion technology.

These films are extremely hygienic and provide protection from various hazardous environments. Moreover, their flexible breathability, good processing, lightweight nature, exceptional mechanical strength and adhesion make them useful in a wide range of end-user industries including building & construction, pharmaceuticals, medical, industrial, food packaging & processing, personal care & hygiene and they also have high demand in the building & construction industry. The filler material used in breathable films reduces the cost by replacing resin with carbonates.

The global breathable films market is expected to register growth at a robust CAGR in the following years.

MARKET DRIVERS:

The growth of this market is attributed towards major pertaining factors including; the increasing awareness of health & hygiene and substantial healthcare expenditure worldwide, growing preference for comfortable & breathable fabrics, the increasing purchasing power of consumers, increasing applications of films in various end-user industries, the global rising population, the increasing demand for processed food, meat, bakery, and cereals, the growing applicability of the product in premium hygiene products and the packaging of food products in the developing countries, rise in the population of infant and old age population and the expansion of healthcare sector etc.

In the developing countries, the personal care expenditure incurred by people are ever rising. As these films are said to aid in the healing process and in removing wrinkles, their demand will increase and will eventually help in fuelling the market growth. Also, the increased demand for product is also expected to raise concerns about the comfort of garments and increasing use by respirable films in jackets, footwear, gloves, and helmet, which in turn will drive the market growth.

Moreover, high absorbency, permeability and strength being very significant features of the breathable films, are making it widely popular for various end-use applications. They are widely used in the hygiene and medical sector for the production of barrier gowns, medical sheets, patient gowns, operating cloth, wound dressing, examination gowns, drapes, under-pads, filtration, operation bed covers, diapers, napkins, wipes, sanitary towels, and incontinence pads effectively.

Furthermore, the rising demand for baby disposables, health products for women, incontinence products for adults, huge adoption in industrial protective apparel to provide personal protection from hazardous industrial environments, along with comfort and strength will also boost the market growth significantly.

However, the higher cost of production of these films over conventional films, the volatility in the prices of raw material, easy availability of product substitute, the environmental effects regarding diaper degradation are a few factors among others which restrain the growth of this market.

More importantly, the global breathable films market is gaining significant traction amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The demand for breathable films in industries such as medical, pharmaceuticals, personal care and hygiene among others has significantly risen in the past few months. Also, the novel coronavirus outbreak has resulted in rising demand for the hospital disposables including gloves, PPE kits, masks and others which has impacted the market positively.
