Smart inhalers also known as connected inhalers and sensors are advanced versions of the conventional respiratory inhalers. These are equipped with digital sensors which aid in tracking data such as dosage timing, monitoring the technique and use of the inhaler, and scheduling the next dosage. Smart Inhalers can generate alerts for everyday dosage using smart devices like phones or tablets connected to the sensors via the Bluetooth. They also gather data to enable professional care and have the potential to improve patients’ adherence to therapies and keep their condition under control.

Some of the drugs used in the inhalers include glucocorticoids, insulin, anti-cholinergic, and beta-agonists for the treatment and prevention of respiratory disorders including asthma and COPD.

The application of this digital technology has been successful in reducing the significant financial costs associated with suboptimal medication adherence, enhancing the respiratory diseases management, and improving the effectiveness of prescribed medications.

The global smart inhalers market is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 18.5% over the period of next 5 years.

MARKET DRIVERS:

The growth of this market is attributed towards major pertaining factors including; the growing prevalence of respiratory disorders & inflammatory diseases such as asthma & COPD globally and the burden on healthcare services as a result of this, the rising levels of air pollution worldwide, the proliferating adoption of smart inhalers across different regions, the growing awareness about the advantage of smart inhalers over conventional inhalers and the improving adherence rate driven by increasing  preference and inclination towards the adoption of smart inhalers for the delivery of drugs directly to the respiratory tract of patients so as to increase the efficacy of drug delivery and maintain track record for monitoring daily medication etc.

Additionally, smart inhalers enable the gathering of vast amount of individual data which acts a significant resource for the identification of the potential hazards for the patients. This data proficiently aids in devising solutions for each of the hazards for their complete eradication. They also help community leaders identify core problems over a particular region which otherwise lead to further worsening in air quality and adverse effects on the pulmonary health of the local populace. This makes smart inhalers highly desired in the medical industry and helps in fueling of the market growth considerably.

Moreover, growing research and development activities coupled with increasing modernization leading to innovative technological advancements has been a continuous fashion in the healthcare sector. Rising adoption of digital technology and partnerships among prominent pharma manufacturers, software companies and others with increased focus on advancement in treatment methods, improved disease management and improved efficacy of prescribed medicines is comprehensively adding to the growth of the smart inhalers market.

Furthermore, other factors such as the benefits of smart inhalers ranging from reducing hospital admissions to improving the efficacy of medicines and reduction in the overall costs associated with the treatment of respiratory disorders, the surging focus towards advanced treatment protocols, the untapped market potential in developing regions with high population and dearth of healthcare amenities, the growing geriatric population and the increasing usage of smartphones, tablets & pad further propel the growth of the market.

However, factors such as the high price of smart inhalers and COPD & asthma treatments, data security concerns related to security devices, the lack of awareness regarding the symptoms of asthma and COPD and the technology across the globe, the limited availability of smart inhalers, the increasing practice of misinterpretation of information and the limited reimbursement scenario restrain the growth of this market.
