Hydropower is an effective source of renewable and mature energies that utilize water from higher to lower altitudes. Hydropower systems’ main components comprise of hydro source, water conductor system, diversion/storage system, (channel/ house building tunnel), and control equipment.

A penstock is a gate-like intake structure that delivers water to sewerage systems and hydro turbines. A penstock for hydroelectric installations is usually equipped with gate systems and surge tank. It can be connected through various components such as drain valve, anchor block, support piers, and air bleed valve depending on the application. The flow is regulated by turbine and is almost nil when turbines are not in service. Penstocks are mainly used in polluted water systems, and need to be maintained by manual cleaning, hot water washing, desiccation and antifouling coatings. Penstocks can be manufactured using a wide range of materials, but the strength and flexibility of steel make it most preferred and suitable material to sustain the pressure fluctuations arising in the turbine operation. The penstock can be made up of cast iron, glass reinforced plastic (GRP), mild steel, wood stave, reinforced cement concrete (RCC), and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) etc. For cases, mild steel is majorly used for wider applicability and availability. 

The arrangement and position of penstocks are determined based on type of dam, relative location of the dam, and location of the intake and outlet. For example, in case of a dam that requires tunnel to divert the flow of the river during its construction, penstocks are usually positioned in tunnels only after the diversion has been discontinued and intake has been plugged. In real time scenarios, these arrangements can be seen in Nevada penstock on Hoover Dam. In case of a low head dam, penstocks are connected in the center of the dam. 

One of the major factors that is driving the market for penstocks is growing demand for water and sewage treatment facilities. In addition, penstocks are being used in hydroelectric reservoirs to control water flow on a large-scale basis. This factor is also expected to boost growth of the market during the forecast period.
