Modified Starch Market By Product Type; By Raw Material; By Function Form; By Production Method; By End-Use & Global Region - - Global Market Analysis, Trends, Opportunity and Forecast, 2022-2032

Modified Starch Market Overview

The global modified starch market size was estimated at USD 15.8 billion in 2022 and is expected to reach USD 20.5 billion by 2032, growing with a CAGR of 2.6% over the forecasted period of 2022 to 2032. Modified starch, also called starch derivatives, is a physically, enzymatically or chemically altered food ingredient made from starch by changing its properties for enhancing its performance in different applications. Modified starch serves different purposes in different industries and is used in all starch applications, such as in food products as a thickening agent, stabilizer or emulsifier agents due to its partially digestible nature and quality of being gluten free, and providing lesser fat than regular starches; in pharmaceuticals as a disintegrate; or as binder in coated paper. They are also used in many other applications and are also useful in easy manufacturing of recipes and cookery.

Modifications are usually done to increase their stability against excessive heat, acid, shear, time, cooling, or freezing; to improve water holding capacity; to change their texture; to decrease or increase their viscosity; to lengthen or shorten gelatinization time; or to increase their viscos-stability.

The global modified starch market is expected to grow at a moderate CAGR in the upcoming years.

Modified Starch Market Drivers

The growth of this market is attributed towards various relying factors including but not limited to; the rapidly developing pharmaceutical industry, the rising demand for convenience food globally, the worldwide increasing consumption of processed food, the growing demand for modified starch in different applications such as textiles, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, paper making and related industries, increased demand for adhesives in a range of industrial applications, high investment in R&D activities and growing number of obese and diabetic population etc.

Additionally, along with the presence of emulsifying agents being a key requirement across several chemical processes within the food industry, the need for stabilizers in food processing, the increasing demand for natural sweeteners in beverages and the use of modified carbohydrates in various end-use industries such as cosmetics, paper are enhancing the growth of the modified starch market.

Moreover, with the introduction of the latest technologies, well established companies in developed regions are focusing on increasing their R&D activities to be able to roll out new products and improve existing product properties so as  to cater to the demand from other end-use industries such as construction adhesive, personal care, paper and corrugation, and more, which, in turn, prospers the overall growth and demand for these products globally.

Furthermore, growth in functional food products, the use of modified starch for the manufacture of animal feed as a result of growing inclination towards owning a pet, clean label demand and the purpose of achieving cost reduction in the production process will contribute in enhancing the growth of the product substantially.

More importantly, the recent outbreak of the COVID-19 disease resulted in ample growth in the modified starch market. This is because people with high blood pressure and diabetes were found to be more susceptible to the disease and hence were seen to be using more products that included modified starch in it. Also, due to the onset of lockdowns, obese people and people who newly put up weight during the time were found to be searching for ways to maintain their health and shape increasingly. This eventually led to the adoption of increased usage of modified starch and the trend of which is likely to continue even post the lifting up of these restrictions anytime in the near future.

However, the rising costs and volatility in process of raw materials, growing stringent regulations, the growing properties of gum arabic coupled with the high cost of natural additives and the availability of alternatives are factors that are hampering the growth of this market.
