Seed treatment or seed dressing, in agriculture and horticulture is a process of applying physical, chemical or biological compounds or agents to seeds prior to or during planting, in order to suppress, control or repel damages caused by pathogens, insects, and pests that attack seeds or plants. These are a more environment friendly way of using pesticides as the amounts used can be very small.
Seed treatment is used as additives in colorant, carriers, binders, antifoam agents, lubricants, and micronutrients. These are used in different concentrations according to the requirements and have several applications in the agricultural industry such as insecticides, fungicides and bio-control.
By providing protection from pre- and post-emergent insects and diseases across a variety of soil types and environmental conditions, seed treatment improves the yield of crops, reduces germination time, and enhances overall productivity. This treatment has emerged as a cost-effective crop protection solution as compared to conventional spraying as it is more efficient and less labor intensive acting as insurance to seed investments.
The global seed treatment market is expected to grow at a more than healthy CAGR in the next few years.
The growth of this market is attributed towards major relying factors including; the increasing demand for high-efficiency seed chemicals, the rising demand for seed treatment in the agriculture sector, the growing R&D initiatives to improve crop yield and seed potential, the supportive government regulations and policies towards economic and eco-friendly seed treatment methods, the growing development in bio-farming techniques coupled with technological advances in the field of seed treatment, the increasing manufacturing of pesticides and insecticides due to their environment protective nature, the increasing technology awareness among the farming community, the increasing demand for organic vegetables and fruits as a result of rising health awareness and the increasing adoption of organic farming practices in emerging economies etc.
Moreover, to cater to the food demand of growing population, advanced agricultural materials are required. As a result, there has been substantial increase in efforts to improve agricultural yields through new technologies such as seed treatment. And consequently, seed companies are focusing on initiating new collaborations and on the introduction of new products, in order to take advantage of innovations in both biology and chemistry of new seed treatment technologies.
Furthermore, factors such as the increasing global need to turn every seed into a viable seedling and produce higher yields ,reduction of arable land, the increasing prices of genetically modified (GM) seeds, the increasing corn production due to rising demand for biofuels, the increasing fungal growth due to changing climatic conditions, growing concerns regarding food safety, the growing need for sustainable farming to combat early-season diseases and pests and rising environmental concerns are anticipated to further propel the growth of this market.
However, change in or unfavorable climatic conditions, the environmental concerns about the toxicity of these chemical treatments, high availability of substitute like planting of certified seeds, crop rotation, fertility management etc, the limited shelf life of the treated seeds, low margins for the major crop producers due to economic factors and the increasing strict regulations on the usage of this treatment are major factors which are hindering the growth of this market.

The North American region has been dominating in the seed treatment market in the recent years and is expected to maintain its position and continue to grow significantly in the coming years as well. This can be attributed to the policies set by regulatory agencies to ensure minimum food requirement, the growing demand from the agriculture industry, the increasing demand for crop yield & efficiency and the increasing awareness among farmers about benefits of seed treatment etc along with other associated factors. The U.S and Canada are the major contributors in the region.
The Asia Pacific region is the fastest growing region in the seed treatment market and is projected to grow at a robust rate in the next few years owing to the increasing agricultural practices in the region, the increasing requirement of high-quality agricultural produce, increasing application of seed protection/enhancement products for both short-term and perennial crops, the growing developments in the agriculture industry, increased awareness among consumers, the large area under agriculture cultivation coupled with growing population in the region which increases the use of various crop protection chemicals for enhancing crop yield, massive growth in agricultural outputs, increasing potential in the region for the establishment of key market players, and the rising need to make efforts to minimize the environmental concerns associated with excessive use of pesticides etc. India, China, Japan and South Korea are the major contributors in the region.
The European region holds a significant share in the seed treatment market and is expected to witness tremendous growth in the upcoming years due to the increasing demand for organic food products in the region, the high demand for treated seeds in major economies of the region owing to their large-scale production and the presence and increasing number of bases of established players in the market etc. The major contributors in the region include Spain, France, Germany, and Russia of which Spain is the leader.
FEW KEY PLAYERS IN SEED TREATMENT MARKET:
In December 2020, Advanced Biological Marketing announced their newest product launch for the seed treatment industry – GroFlo. The GroFlo product, which will be available in early 2021, reportedly brings together all the benefits of a colorant and polymer with the addition of nutrients to get seeds off to a great start.
In December 2020, PGG Wrightson Seeds (PGGWS), New Zealand’s largest seed company, as per an agreement got allowance to distribute Marrone Bio Innovations, Inc.’s line of Pro Farm Technology products. The recently signed agreement provides PGGWS with exclusive crop dependent selling rights to MBI’s Pro Farm UBP seed treatment line for the next five years (2020-2025) in Uruguay.
